About The Coop, Barnes & Noble, Harvard:
The Coop, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is renowned as the historic Harvard University bookstore. Acclaimed for its expansive collection of books, posters, and university insignia merchandise, The Coop serves as a central hub for visiting parents, alumni, students, and tourists from around the world.
Project Details:
Ideoli Group was selected to create custom lighting solutions for The Coop’s latest renovation. The challenge was to design luminaires that honor the historic feel of the bookstore while integrating modern features for energy efficiency and enhanced aesthetics.
Custom Lighting Design:
Ideoli Group collaborated with architect Arrowstreet, Inc. and the designers at McGinty Co. to conceptualize and create a variety of custom LED fixtures that seamlessly blend with the historic and architectural elements of The Coop.
Enhanced Ambiance:
Patrons are welcomed by beautiful LED disc chandeliers as they enter The Coop. These 36-inch LED discs feature a progressive design with a plated brass finish, complementing the warm wood tones throughout the space. The chandeliers deliver 5000 lumens in a frosted acrylic downlight, casting a warm glow at 3000K.
Innovative Solutions:
Ideoli’s ceiling mount luminaires provide a contemporary feel to the second and third-floor retail spaces with modern matte silver finishes. These 36-inch LED discs are flush-mounted on the drop ceiling, offering comfortable ambient lighting to illuminate the expansive selection of books.
Stairway Art:
Ideoli crafted a modern light art installation for the new lower-level staircase. The chandeliers are stem-mounted decorative pieces, featuring a cascade of five cylindrical tubes of light that create a waterfall effect, drawing attention to the nearby backlit “H” insignia of Harvard.
Highlighting Merchandise:
Throughout the space, Ideoli’s LED linear luminaire and LED downlight enhance the display of Harvard merchandise. The fixtures are staggered in a zigzag pattern, while the downlights provide versatile illumination for the frequently visited retail areas.
Impact:
The custom lighting solutions provided by Ideoli Group transformed The Coop into a brightened, more modern space while maintaining its traditional charm. The lighting fixtures not only enhanced the visual appeal and functionality of the bookstore but also supported The Coop’s commitment to energy efficiency and sustainability. This collaboration demonstrated Ideoli Group’s ability to deliver tailored lighting solutions that meet the unique needs of historic and iconic spaces.
